Black Beluga Lentils // Instant Pot Recipe!

Inspired by Deb Perelman’s recipe for Punjabi-Style Black Lentils, I decided to see if I could adapt it to make it in my Instant Pot.I have to say, it worked quite well and my Instant Pot Punjabi-Style Black Lentils was delicious.. You might wonder why it is called “Punjabi-Style”.It is very similar to Dal Makhani, a dish from the Punjab region of northern India.

Heat the oil in an Instant Pot set to Sauté mode (or in a stovetop PC over medium heat) until the oil starts to shimmer. Add the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic, then sprinkle with ½ teaspoon fine sea salt. Sauté until the onion softens and turns translucent, about 5 minutes.

I use black beluga lentils for this recipe. I think they add a nice contrast to dishes with their color — plus they’re oh-so-delicious with simple seasonings like salt and pepper! There are many types of lentils: brown lentils, green lentils, red lentils, yellow lentils, Puy lentils, and black lentils.

Instructions. In a large saucepan or deep skillet, simmer the black lentils with the broth, water and spices for about 15 to 20 minutes until tender. Drain excess liquid. Taste and if serving as is, season with additional salt and pepper as necessary. Or, use directly in our Lentil Salad or other recipes.
